TikTok introduces Whee for sharing photos with close friends

Social media giant TikTok is venturing into new territory with the launch of Whee, a photo-sharing app focused on close friends.

Unlike TikTok's core video-centric platform, Whee encourages users to share real-life moments captured through photos with a select group. This focus on a smaller, more intimate audience is evident in the app's description: "Capture and share real-life photos that only your friends can see, allowing you to be your most authentic self."

Early glimpses of the app, discovered on the Google Play Store, showcase features like a photo viewfinder, a friends list for messaging, and a personalized feed. Many details within the app highlight its purpose of fostering connections between close friends.

Currently in its testing phase, Whee is available for Android users in over a dozen countries (excluding the US as of this writing). While iOS availability and a wider global rollout remain to be seen, this move suggests TikTok's exploration of expanding its reach beyond short-form video content.

This isn't TikTok's first foray into image-sharing territory. In April, they introduced TikTok Notes, another app focused on image-based content.
